Lords back to .500 with a win over the Colts

Women’s Basketball: Durham defeated Centennial 64-49 (box score attached)

OSHAWA, Ont. – Jessica Newton (Oshawa, Ont.) scored a game high 21 points to lead the Durham College women’s basketball team to a 64-49 victory over the Centennial Colts.

The win puts an end to the Lords four game losing streak and brings their record back to the .500 mark sitting at 5-5. Centennial falls to 1-8 in their first season back in OCAA women’s basketball.

Newton was perfect from the free throw line capitalizing on all eight opportunities from the charity stripe. She would add eight field goals to her totals including a three pointer for 21 points. Katie Watts, who is also from Oshawa, had 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals in just over 30 minutes of play.

Although OCAA rookie of the year hopeful Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) scored only one point, she was just shy of a double-double with 12 rebounds and nine assists. Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) scored 11 points as did Laura Tomek (Blenheim, Ont.) coming off the bench.

The provincially ranked Lords will look to make it two in a row as they head to Belleville on Thursday night for a match against Loyalist College (2-8). A win over the Lancers would bump the Lords into sole possession of fourth place in the standings.
