Durham College grinds out a win over Centennial

Men’s Basketball: Durham defeated Centennial 72-58 (Box Score Attached)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men’s basketball team picked up an important win on Tuesday night as they defeated Centennial College 72-58 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

The Lords earned their tenth win of the year to sit in second place with a 10-4 record. To finish in the top two spots in the East region and earn an automatic berth into the OCAA championship, the Lords will have to continue their winning ways to finish the season as Algonquin (9-3), Seneca (9-3) and St. Lawrence (8-2) trail close behind.

In Tuesday’s game, Centennial held a lead midway through the second half, but Durham College turned up their intensity to jump ahead in the game and pull away down the stretch.

Courtney Small (Oshawa, Ont.) managed to record up a double-double as he scored a game high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Just as his teammate Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) did less than a week ago, Small passed assistant coach Matt Markovic to move up the Durham College all-time scoring chart, sitting one point out of the top ten with 611 career points (Ken Upshaw – 612 career points).

Durham was able to capitalize off of Centennial mistakes as they scored 25 points off turnovers. Tyler Pelley (Ajax, Ont.), who is leading the OCAA in steals added two more to his totals along with 11 points in the win. Tyler McGarrity (Ajax, Ont.) finished the night with 14 points.

The Lords will have no time to rest as they travel to Loyalist College (2-10) on Thursday night. Their next home game is on Friday, January 29 against Georgian College (4-8).
