Durham College trumps George Brown in women’s volleyball – Doris chasing history

Women’s Volleyball: Durham defeated George Brown 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 26-24)

TORONTO – The Durham College women's volleyball team won their sixth straight match to improve to 11-1 as they defeated the George Brown Huskies 3-0 in Toronto over the weekend. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18 and 26-24.

Trailing 21-9 in the final set, the Lords made a tremendous comeback to complete the sweep as they picked up a 26-24 set win.

“The entire team got a chance to contribute in the win,” said Lords head coach Shane Christopher. “It was  great to see the team not give up and fight back from a large deficit in the third and final set.”

Leading the Lords in scoring was second year outside hitter Julie Hakkesteegt (Brighton, Ont.) who had four kills and three blocks.

In her fifth year with the team, Lords captain Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) is chasing history. After Friday’s game, Doris has 411 career kills, six shy of the Durham College all-time record of 417 set by Erin Smith. Doris has also amassed 693 career points, to sit fifth all-time in OCAA career scoring. She is trailing Claire Bramma (RMC) for fourth place in the scoring charts who finished her career with 705 points.

Doris has certainly put her mark on the Durham Lords scoring charts. She is first in career blocks (194) and points (693), second in kills (417) and fourth in aces (77).

The Lords will look ahead to back-to-back home games this weekend beginning on Saturday, January 23 as the Boreal Viperes (0-13) pay a visit to the CRWC at 12 p.m.

First place will be on the line on Sunday at noon as the Cambrian Golden Shield meet up with the Lords. The Golden Shield have a 11-2 record and trail Durham by just a half game in the standings.
