Seneca stuns Durham on home court

Men’s Basketball: Seneca defeated Durham 84-68 (Box Score Attached)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham Lords men’s basketball team came up empty on Tuesday night as they were defeated by the Seneca Sting 84-68 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

The loss drops Durham to fifth place in the East Region standings with a 12-5 record. Seneca on the other hand won their fourth straight game and jumped into third place in the regional standings with a 13-4 record.

The Sting led from start to finish on Tuesday night, stunning the hometown faithful. Durham could not seem to find a rhythm in first half, shooting only 10-for-31 (32.3%) from the field, as they trailed 37-27 going into half-time. Seneca would continue their strong play in the second half as they had the hot hand all night, shooting 35-for-59 (59.3%) to pick up the win.

Down by 10 points in the second half, it looked as if Durham was about to gain some momentum when Tyler Pelley (Ajax, Ont.) scored on a lay-up after a steal, but Seneca’s Vadim Halimov would lead the Sting back down the court and hit a big three pointer to end the Lords run. Halimov had a career night for Seneca going 8-for-11 for 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) led the way for Durham with a double-double, scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds. Smith is one point shy of 700 in his career, as he moved into seventh in all-time Lords scoring.

Tyler McGarrity (Ajax, Ont.) and Dave Parks (Ajax, Ont.) combined for 29 points in the loss. Pelley, who leads the OCAA in steals, only forced one turnover in the game bringing his season total to 78. Parks had a team high five steals for Durham.

The Lords will have an important game against the nationally ranked St. Lawrence College Vikings (15-2) on Friday, February 12. Tip-off at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre is 8 p.m.
