Lords clinch OCAA East Region Championship

Women’s Volleyball: Durham defeated Algonquin 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women’s volleyball team clinched the OCAA East Region championship on Saturday as they defeated the Algonquin Thunder 3-1 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

For Durham, it marks their 14th overall regional title and fourth in five years. Improving to 16-2 and winning the regional title earns Durham an automatic bid into the OCAA Provincial Championship set to take place from February 25-27 at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont.

The Lords looked to be in trouble on Saturday against the Thunder after dropping the first set 23-25. But as they have been able to do all season long, Durham stormed back with three close set victories with scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-22 to pick up the win.

Third year starter Kerri Fotherby had an outstanding performance in the win picking up 19 points and 11 digs. The Newcastle native was dominant in the Lords three victories this week scoring 36 points and 16 digs. Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) picked up 14 points in the victory including five blocks while Allison Doris (Ajax, Ont.) scored 12 points.

Libero Kourtney Cyr (Uxbridge, Ont.) was great on the defensive end for Durham recording 15 digs. Cyr has been among the OCAA leaders in digs all season, as she continues to frustrate the opposition’s offence.

Senior’s night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre will take place on Thursday, February 11 as the Lords will take on the Loyalist Lancers. First serve for Durham’s final home game will take place at 6 p.m.
