Lords win a pivotal marathon match against Algonquin

Men’s Volleyball: Durham defeated Algonquin 3-2 (14-25, 25-17, 25-16, 11-25, 16-14)

OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College earned two crucial points in the standings on Saturday as they defeated the Algonquin Thunder 3-2 in men’s volleyball action at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre. Fans were treated to a thrilling match between the two rivals as the fifth and deciding set needed extra points to solve a winner, with the hometown Lords eventually coming away with 16-14 final set victory.

The win moves Durham (12-4) ahead of Algonquin (11-5) into third place in the East region standings. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Lords have an opportunity to finish in the top two spots in the East standings, which would earn them an automatic entry into the OCAA Championship in Ancaster, Ont.

The Lords look to catch Loyalist College (13-3) who currently sit in second place, two points ahead of the Lords. Durham and Loyalist will square off on Thursday, February 11 (8 p.m.) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre with second place on the line. In their previous meeting this season, Durham swept the Lancers 3-0 in Belleville.

Saturday’s game featured the Lords offensive stars, shining on defence as Mike Goulding (Oshawa, Ont.) and Jamie Mayer (Pentanguishene, Ont.) combined for 27 digs in the match.

Dave McMann (Elmvale, Ont.) provided Durham with the offensive spark as he had a game high 15 point performance recording 12 kills and three blocks.

Thursday night will be senior’s night at the CRWC as it is the Lords final home game of the season.
