SUDBURY, Ont. – The Durham College women’s volleyball season came to end on Saturday as the Lords fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers 3-0 in the bronze medal semi-finals of the 2010 OCAA Championship. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21.
Mohawk would go on and win the bronze medal after defeating Fanshawe College 3-2 later in the day. The Humber Hawks won their third straight provincial title, defeating Nipissing 3-2 in the gold medal game. This marked Humber’s third straight provincial title in OCAA women’s volleyball.
The Lords finish the year with a 20-7 overall record, the fourth time in five seasons the team has recorded at least 20 wins. Finishing in fifth place at the OCAA Championship also extends the Lords ‘OCAA final eight’ streak to 19 seasons.
Although the Lords were swept out of the championship in straight sets, all three games against Mohawk were tight that came down to the wire.
Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.), who played her final game in a Durham College uniform, recorded a team high 13 points, including six kills, five blocks and an ace. Samantha Roelofsen (Elma, Ont.) chipped in with six kills, three aces and one block. As she has done all season, Durham libero Kourtney Cyr (Uxbridge, Ont.) had a great defensive effort with 14 digs.
Jenn Knowles was the Mountaineers leading scorer with 10 kills, three blocks and two aces.
Durham College had plenty to celebrate in 2009/10 when it comes to women’s volleyball. The Lords won their 14th conference championship with a 17-3 conference record and had four players recognized as OCAA all-stars (M. Doris, K. Fotherby, K. Cyr and M. Renwick).
The season was also the final year for Mandi Doris, one of the college’s all-time greats in women’s volleyball. Doris leaves Durham as the all-time leader in matches played (81), kills (484), blocks (217) and points (771). She is also the OCAA all-time leader in blocks and third on the scoring charts.
