Slow start haunts Durham in OCAA playoff action
Women’s Basketball – OCAA Championship Qualifying Game
St. Clair defeated Durham 71-51 (Box Score Attached)
WINDSOR, Ont. – St. Clair College put an end to Durham College’s run at the OCAA women’s basketball championship on Saturday as they defeated the Lords 71-51 in the first round of the playoffs.
St. Clair got out to a great start as they opened the game up with two runs of 16-4 and13-3 to take a 29-7 lead midway through the first half. Durham would chip away at the lead and finish with a run of their own to close the gap to 33-17 at half-time.
In the second half, both teams forced the tempo with full court pressure resulting in a lot of turnovers and a foul plagued game. Durham narrowed the game within 12 points on three occasions, but St. Clair never relinquished control as they came away with a 71-51 victory.
Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) and Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) had star performances for the Lords, as they both finished with double-doubles in the loss. Hare had a monster game with 17 points and 17 rebounds while Emery was one steal short of a triple double recording 17 points, 11 rebounds and nine steals.
St. Clair’s Sara Levesque scored 21 points in the second half, totaling 25 points in the game. She also finished with 20 rebounds including nine on the offensive end.
With the win, the Saints advance to the OCAA Championships hosted by Georgian College in Barrie from March 4-6, 2010. The loss puts an end to Durham’s season, in which they had an overall record of 11-14 and a 9-7 conference record. It was the Lords best season since 2005/06.
Emery ended the year averaging 15.6 points per game, finishing third in East region scoring. The North Bay native was also second in OCAA steals with 63 on the year.
Hare, a freshman in the Lords lineup, was just shy of averaging a double-double per game with 9.9 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game. Hare was third in OCAA rebounds with 145 on the year.
The Lords look to be in good shape heading into next season with their entire lineup set to return. Mixed with a few key recruits, the Lords will be looking to win their first OCAA medal in over a decade in 2010/11.
