SUDBURY, Ont. – The Durham Lords women’s volleyball team pulled out a five set victory over the Sheridan Bruins on Friday afternoon to advance to the final day of the OCAA Championship in Sudbury. In what is an early candidate for match of the championship, the Lords hung on to win by set scores of 27-25, 25-12, 25-27, 22-25, 17-15.
The Lords will advance to the bronze medal semi-finals in which they will meet up with the loser of the Humber/Mohawk semi-final taking place later tonight. First serve for Durham’s Saturday match will be at 11 a.m.
Against Sheridan, Durham got off to a quick start as they took the first two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-12. As it looked as if Durham was going to cruise to the straight sets victory, the Bruins clawed back winning the next two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-22.
The fifth and final set was a barn-burner needing extra points to break the tie. The Lords got out to an early 6-3 lead, but Sheridan managed to fight back once again to take a commanding 14-11 lead.
After a Durham side out (14-12), head coach Shane Christopher substituted in freshman Jessica McNulty (Renfrew, Ont.) to handle the serving duties. The strategy worked as Durham won the next two points to level the set at 14 points apiece. After a Sheridan side out, Durham countered with three hard fought points on some amazing rallies, to take the set 17-15 and advance to the final day of the championship.
Captain Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) earned player of the game honours for Durham recording an astounding seven blocks in the match. She also totaled 14 kills for 21 points in the win. Doris was named the player of the game following the marathon match.
All-star setter Meghan Renwick (Brooklin, Ont.) did an excellent job of managing the court as five Lords reached double digits in total offence. The five players included; Doris - 21 points, Samantha Roelofsen (Elma, Ont.) – 17 points, Kerri Fotherby (Newcastle, Ont.) – 16 points, Julie Hakkesteegt (Brighton, Ont.) – 14 points and Allison Doris (Ajax, Ont.) – 10 points.
Kourtney Cyr (Uxbridge, Ont.) put up huge numbers on the defensive end recording 25 digs. Fotherby also added 14 digs in the win.
Elena Stefanac of Sheridan had a team high 15 points and nine digs in the loss, as the Bruins were eliminated from the championship.
