ANCASTER, Ont. – The road to gold came to an end for the Durham College men’s volleyball team Friday night as they were defeated by the Humber Hawks 3-0 in the OCAA Championship semi-finals.

With the win, the number one ranked Humber Hawks advanced to the gold medal game where they will take on the Seneca Sting. Seneca advanced to their second straight OCAA championship final after defeating the host Redeemer Royals 3-1 in the other semi-final. The gold medal game will take place at 5 p.m.

The Lords will turn their focus on winning a bronze medal, as they will take part in the consolation semi-finals on Saturday at 11 a.m. Durham will face the Mohawk Mountaineers in the semi’s, looking to advance to the bronze medal final at 3 p.m. The Lords have won 15 OCAA men’s volleyball medals, the most all-time by any college.

Durham’s opening set against Humber could have gone either way, with the two teams trading points back and forth in the see-saw match-up. In the late stages of the set, Humber was able to take advantage of a couple of Durham miscues along with controversial calls by the officiating staff to take the opener by a score of 25-21.

Humber carried that momentum into the second set as they blew away the Lords 25-11. Durham would rebound in the third set by getting out to an early lead behind some great serving, but the Hawks proved why they are the top seed in the province as they fought back to earn a 28-26 win.

CCAA All-Canadian and rookie of the year Terrel Bramwell stole the show for Humber recording 19 points (17 kills, 2 blocks) in the win. Bramwell has been unstoppable in the Hawks two wins at the championship, averaging 6.5 points per game.

Mike Goulding (Oshawa, Ont.) had a team high 12 points for Durham while teammate Jamie Mayer (Pentanguishene, Ont.) recorded eight points.

Saturday will be an emotional day for the Durham College volleyball program, as Lords head coach Gord Williamson and five graduating seniors will be participating in their final game(s) for the Lords. Williamson is retiring after an illustrious 23-year career of coaching collegiate volleyball.
