DC falls to Fanshawe – Sights turn to bronze

OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship - Hosted by Cambrian College (Sudbury, Ont.)

Quarter-Finals: Fanshawe defeated Durham 3-1 (25-22, 12-25, 25-14, 25-16)
Bronze Medal Quarter-Finals: Sheridan vs. Durham (Friday, February 26 at 1 p.m.)

SUDBURY, Ont. – Allison Doris (Ajax, Ont.) of the Durham College women’s volleyball team recorded a game high 15 points but it wasn’t enough to lead the Lords to victory as they fell to the Fanshawe Falcons 3-1 in the opening round of the OCAA Championship in Sudbury, Ont. Set scores were 25-22, 12-25, 25-14, 25-16.

The Lords will now have their sights set on the bronze medal as they take on the Sheridan Bruins in the consolation quarter-finals on Friday, February 26 at 1 p.m. Fanshawe advanced to the semi-finals where they will take on Nipissing University at 5 p.m. Humber and Mohawk were the other quarter-final winners on Thursday.

After dropping the opening set 25-22, the Lords looked to have turned around the momentum in the match winning set two by a score of 25-12. The second set win would be the lone bright spot for the east region champs on Thursday as the Falcons soared to 25-14 and 25-16 set wins to claim the match.

Doris was on fire at the net as all her 15 points were all kills. Samantha Roelofsen (Elma, Ont.) chipped in with seven points while Kerri Fotherby (Newcastle, Ont.) recorded six kills and two blocks. Julie Hakkesteegt (Brighton, Ont.) was impressive up the middle with a team high five blocks for Durham.

Leading the way for Fanshawe was Katie Reist who recorded 12 points and 11 digs. Megan Walls and Stacie Thomas also looked impressive for the Falcons scoring nine points respectively.

Durham libero and OCAA second team all-star Kourtney Cyr (Uxbridge, Ont.) was named the player of the game for her defensive efforts.
