Quarter-Finals: Durham defeated Nipissing 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23)
Semi-Finals: Durham vs. Algonquin/Humber - Friday, February 26 @ 8 p.m.

ANCASTER, Ont. – The Durham College men’s volleyball team advanced to the OCAA Championship semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Thursday afternoon. Set scores in the quarter-final match were 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23.

The semi-finals are set for Friday, February 26 at 8 p.m. as the Lords will take on the winner of the Algonquin/Humber match (Thursday – 8 p.m.).

Nipissing was one of the favourites heading into the championship, sporting a 12-4 conference record and sweeping Fleming College in the qualifying round. The Lords did not seem to mind playing the underdog role on Thursday as they played a strong game from the opening serve to the final whistle.

After splitting the first two sets by scores of 25-21, Durham came out with a lot of intensity in the third set. The Lords would get out to an early lead in which they would use to cruise to a 25-18 third set win. In the fourth and final set, Nipissing managed to make things close but Durham would eventually put things away with a 25-23 victory.

OCAA all-star Jamie Mayer (Pentanguishene, Ont.) led the Lords with a game high 23 points, including 15 kills, four aces and four blocks. The Lakers could not find an answer for the fourth year veteran as he received a number of great sets from fellow all-star Jeff Torraville (Oshawa, Ont.), hammering the ball to the floor.

Outside hitter Mike Goulding (Oshawa, Ont.) also had a standout game recording 17 points including 14 kills. Steve Clarey (Baltimore, Ont.) recorded a team high nine digs while libero Jimmy Ly (Mississauga, Ont.) had his best game of the year with six digs.

The Nipissing defence had trouble controlling the Lords serves the entire match as DC recorded 10 aces compared to just four by the Lakers.

Head coach Gord Williamson, who is retiring after the season, did a great job in preparing his veteran squad for the match. The Lords contained the Lakers leading scorers, twin brothers Adam and Andre Leblanc, who averaged just over 2.75 points per game. The Lakers also seemed rattled after Williamson called a timeout, putting three serves into the net. With hall of famer Stan Marchut in attendance, there was certainly Durham College coaching excellence throughout the gym on Thursday.
