George Brown trumps Durham – Playoffs up next

Women’s Basketball: George Brown defeated Durham 80-42

TORONTO – Durham College fell to George Brown 80-42 in women’s basketball action in Toronto as the Huskies claimed first place the OCAA east region. Wednesday’s game wrapped up the OCAA regular season as both teams will now look ahead to the playoffs.

Durham (9-7) finished in a tie for fourth place in the OCAA east region along with the St. Lawrence Vikings (9-7). After the split between the two teams was broken (points for/against in head-to-head matches), it was determined that Durham would go on the road for their qualifying match.

In the playoffs, the Lords will be up against the St. Clair Saints (Windsor, Ont.) on Saturday, February 27 at 2 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the OCAA Championship which will take place from March 4-6 in Barrie, Ont.

Durham has not had a lot of luck in the playoffs against St. Clair, falling in crossover matches in two straight years (2006-07 and 2007-08). Head coach Tim Baulk (ChPC) and his Lords squad is hoping to reverse this trend, as they continue to play with more confidence every time they step on the court.

Durham ended the year with a 9-7 conference record, finishing above .500 for the first time since 2005-06. That year was the Lords only appearance in the OCAA Championship in the past ten years, where the team finished in fourth place.

The green and gold knew Wednesday’s game was going to be difficult, as the Huskies were playing with the regional title on the line on their home court. With the win, George Brown wins the region title and finished with a conference record of 15-1.
