Major event coming to Oshawa - Durham College selected to host the 2011 CCAA men’s basketball national championship

OSHAWA, Ont. – Canada’s top men’s basketball talent will be coming to Oshawa as Durham College has been selected to host the 2011 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national championship.

“We are very excited our bid was approved by the National body and also about being given the opportunity to host such a major national event right here in the Durham Region,” said Ken Babcock, Durham College athletic director. “We have a terrific reputation and strong track record in hosting major events at Durham College over the past 20 years. That same awesome hosting effort will continue the tradition come March of 2011 as we welcome Canada’s best college talent to our new state-of-the-art Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre.”

“If you are a basketball fan in the Durham Region, be sure to mark down March 2011 as Durham College will be the place to be for some of the finest hoops action you will see live in the country.”

The national championship will be held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre from March 17-19, 2011 and will feature the top eight teams in the country battling it out for the national crown. The championship field will consist of the winning teams from each conference: British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces as well as two wild card teams. As the host, Durham College will receive the final bid in the championship.

The CCAA men’s basketball championship has only been held in Ontario three times in the last 20 years, with the last occasion being in 2006 at Sheridan College in Brampton. The 2010 national championship will be hosted by SAIT in Calgary, Alta.

Although this will be the first time Durham has hosted the CCAA basketball championship, the college is no stranger to hosting national events. The Lords have hosted award winning and highly regarded national championships including men’s volleyball (1990 & 2003), women’s volleyball (1990), men’s soccer (1999), women’s soccer (1999), men’s & women’s golf (2001 & 2002) and most recently the CIBA baseball national championship (2009).

“Hosting the championship will be a great opportunity to showcase our campus, our hospitality and the entire Durham Region to the rest of the country,” said Babcock. “The entire host committee will be working hard to make the 2011 championship one to remember.”
