Durham College grad and former DC Athlete of the Year receives prestigious King Clancy Award

TORONTO – Durham College graduate and former men’s basketball player Frank Bruno was honoured at the 26th Annual Gala Event In Support of Persons with Physical Disabilities as he was a recipient of the prestigious King Clancy award.

“What a great achievement,” said Ken Babcock, Durham College athletic director. “When you look at the list of past recipients and you see names like Walter Gretzky, Terry Fox and Rick Hansen, you realize what a special award this is. Everyone at Durham College would like to congratulate Frank on his accomplishment.”

The Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (CFPDP) hosted the event at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel as over nine hundred people enjoyed a special dinner and evening of entertainment as CFPDP paid tribute to the achievements and aspirations of Canadians with disabilities.

The King Clancy Award is presented to distinguished Canadians who have made significant contributions in assisting disabled citizens to achieve a more rewarding lifestyle. The award recognizes those individuals whose outstanding accomplishments have helped to increase public awareness about the potential of disabled people. Through their efforts, these individuals have inspired others to become active and contributing members of society.

Bruno was one of three recipients of the award, along with Julian Fantino and Debbie Low.

The Award was established in November, 1986 by the Canadian Foundation for Disabled Persons to commemorate the contributions of King Clancy as an inspirational humanitarian. "This King, this All-Star," said Monsignor Kenneth Robitaille", is very precious in our eyes -- an inspiration and an encouragement. Persons like Francis Michael Clancy are not very common, so when we find them let us not neglect to honour them ... this was a man!"

Bruno played two seasons with the Durham College men’s basketball team and won the Athlete of the Year award in 1982-83. Upon graduation, he has been a significant contributor to the varsity athletic program as a Lords alumnus.

The Durham College athletic department would like to congratulate Frank on this wonderful achievement.
