Lords upset the nationally ranked Vikes – East Region still up for grabs

Men’s Basketball: Durham defeated St. Lawrence 75-63 (Box Score Attached)

OSHAWA, Ont. – For the second time this season, the Durham College men’s basketball team upset St. Lawrence College as they defeated the Vikings 75-63 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre on Friday night.

The Lords (13-5) swept the season series against St. Lawrence (15-3), outscoring them 161-132 in their two meetings.

With the playoffs looming, only six points separate first through fifth place in the OCAA east region standings. At the end of the regular season, the first and second teams will receive a bye to the OCAA championships. Third and fourth place will host a crossover qualifying game while fifth and sixth place will go on the road.

Unlike Tuesday’s game against Seneca, Durham got off to a good start as they led the match from start to finish. Durham shot 72 per cent from the floor in the first half, compared to just the 26 per cent of St. Lawrence as the Lords took a commanding 42-27 lead into halftime.

The Vikes would not be able to overcome the early deficit as the Lords cruised to the 12 point victory.

Courtney Small (Ajax, Ont.) and Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) each scored over 20 points for Durham. Small finished with 22 points and seven rebounds shooting 10-for-14 from the floor while Smith had a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Smith has scored over 700 points with the Lords as he sits seventh in all-time scoring with 720 career points.

Tyler Pelley had a strong game hitting on five of seven shots for 10 points. The Ajax native continues to add to his OCAA leading steal total as he has 81 in 18 games. Tyler McGarrity (Ajax, Ont.) was just shy of a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Lords home finale is set to take place on Friday, February 19 at 8 p.m. when the Fleming Knights (15-4) visit the CRWC. The Knights are tied with the Vikings for first place in the east region.

The Lords close out their regular season on the road against George Brown College (10-7) on Wednesday, February 24. The OCAA championship qualifying round will take place from February 26-27, 2010.
