Seniors night alright for Durham College

Men’s Volleyball: Durham defeated Loyalist 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-21)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men’s volleyball team will be in control of their own playoff destiny after defeating the Loyalist Lancers 3-0 on Thursday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC). Set scores in the match were 25-19, 25-11 and 25-21.

The Lords (13-4) move into a tie with Loyalist (13-4) for second place in the East Region standings, but were 2-0 against the Lancers this season. With a win over Georgian (3-12) in their regular season finale, Durham will clinch second place and earn an automatic berth into the OCAA Championship.

It was a special night at the CRWC as it was the Lords final home game of the regular season. Jeff Torraville (Oshawa, Ont.), Matt Mahorn (Whitby, Ont.), Dave McMann (Elmvale, Ont.), Mike Goulding (Oshawa, Ont.) and Jamie Mayer (Pentanguishene, Ont.) were all honoured as graduating seniors following the game.

It was fitting that Thursday’s sweep over the Lancers was a total team effort with five players moving on after the season.  Mayer led the team with 10 points, including seven kills and three aces while Steve Clarey (Baltimore, Ont.) and Jeff Torraville contributed with nine and eight points respectively. Jimmy Ly (Mississauga, Ont.) had a break out game with seven digs in the win.

For Durham, it was their 20th overall win this season and it marks the first time since 2001/2002 that Durham has won over 20 games in consecutive years.

The Lords will close out the regular season on Wednesday, February 17 in Barrie against the Georgian Grizzlies. The OCAA championship is set to take place from February 25-27 in Ancaster, Ont.
