Amazing comeback effort falls short against Seneca

Women’s Basketball: Seneca defeated Durham 65-58

OSHAWA, Ont. – Trailing the Seneca Sting 54-34 in the second half, the Durham College women’s basketball team managed to turn on the jets as they cut the Seneca lead to just one point in the late stages of the game. However, the Lords would eventually run out of gas as Seneca picked up the win defeating Durham by a final score of 65-58 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

“We will take a lot from this game tonight,” said Durham College head coach Tim Baulk (ChPC). “Our team fought hard when facing adversity and overcame a lot of obstacles. We know we can compete with the top teams and we need that confidence heading into the playoffs.”

The Lords 20-1 run in the second half was attributed to a great team effort. Jessica Newton (Oshawa, Ont.), had a team high 14 points in the half, as she finished with 19 points in the game. Newton’s consecutive free throw streak was snapped at 22, as she went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.), Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) and Laura Tomek (Blenheim, Ont.) each had nine points respectively in the game. Ruth Holland and Tamara Nembhard of the Seneca Sting each recorded double-doubles in the win.

Durham falls to 7-6 on the year, trailing St. Lawrence College (9-5) by four points for fourth place in the standings. The two teams will meet up on Friday, February 12 at the CRWC at 6 p.m. The Durham College women’s basketball alumni game will also be taking place that evening.
