Lords drop a close decision to St. Lawrence

Women’s Basketball: St. Lawrence defeated Durham 64-54

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Lords drop down to the .500 mark as they enter the holiday break after dropping a 64-54 decision to the St. Lawrence Vikings on the road Friday night.

The Vikings got off to a quick start in the game leading by as many as 14 points in the first half. Durham would show a lot of resiliency, scoring six unanswered points to end the half at 26-20 in favour of the Vikings.

The Lords continued the pressure into the second, climbing back and passing the Vikings at the mid-way mark by a score 32-30. After falling behind for the first time in the game, the Vikings bounced right back and took the lead for good. St. Lawrence would outscore Durham 32-24 to close out the game, securing the ten point victory.

Laura Tomek (Blenheim, Ont.) led the Lords in scoring with a team high 15 points. Other leading scorers for Durham included Erin Emery of North Bay, Ont. (9 pts), Katie Watts of Oshawa, Ont., (8 pts) and Janna Hagan of Sherwood, Alta., and Jessica Newton of Oshawa, Ont., both finishing with (6 pts).

The Lords had trouble containing Vikings forward Cory Ridgley, who finished with the games’ only double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

After getting out to a 3-0 start, the Lords are now 4-4 and sit in fifth place in the East Region standings. St. Lawrence improves to 4-1 on the year.

Durham will now rest for the holiday break before hitting the road on Saturday, January 16 for a game against the Algonquin Thunder.
