Lords come away with a big win over the nationally ranked Vikings
Men’s Basketball: Durham defeated St. Lawrence 86-69
KINGSTON, Ont. – The Durham College men’s basketball team made a statement on Friday night as they defeated the St. Lawrence Vikings 86-69 on the road. The Vikings entered the game as the fourth ranked team in the country, second overall in the province.
The Lords improve to 7-3 on the year and sit in second place in the East Region standings. After starting the year 4-0 and claiming the top spot in the national rankings, the Vikings have dropped their last two decisions and have a 4-2 record.
The Lords came up with a big defensive effort on Friday as they held St. Lawrence to their lowest offensive output of the season, limiting the Vikings to just 25 field goals and causing 22 turnovers.
Down 38-37 at halftime, Courtney Small ( Oshawa, Ont.) led the Lords comeback scoring 16 of his game high 25 points in the half. The Lords stormed back to outscore St. Lawrence 49-32 in the frame to secure their seventh win of the year.
Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) recorded 18 points and five rebounds in the win while Tyler Pelley (Ajax, Ont.) scored 15 points and added five steals. Pelley continues to lead the province in takeaways with 55 steals on the year.
Livingston Cunningham, also of Ajax, Ont., had a game high 11 rebounds for Durham.
The Lords will return home for the final game of 2009 on Saturday, December 5 against Cambrian College. Tip-off at the CRWC is at 3 p.m.
