Happy Holidays from the Durham Lords – Fall 2009 Recap

OSHAWA, Ont. - With exams in progress and the holidays nearing, the fall semester for varsity athletics is in the books. In the fall of 2009, there were a number of achievements that the Durham College varsity programs had to celebrate. Here is a brief look at some of the highlights:

Women’s Soccer
The Lords were provincially and nationally ranked, finishing with a 9-1-1 regular season record winning the Central East region championship. The team set the all-time record for most goals in a season (59) while going on to win the silver medal at the OCAA provincial championship.

Oshawa native Katie Watts had another tremendous year, earning national recognition as a CCAA All-Canadian while setting the Durham College record for most career goals. Watts finished the season with 18 goals to win the league scoring championship for the second straight year.

Women’s Fastball
The women’s fastball team won their twelfth OCAA regular season title in 13 years while finishing second at the provincial finals. In their first ever appearance at the Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch National Championship, Durham finished first in round robin play with a 3-0 record, before bowing out in the playoff round. Durham College also defeated Monroe Community College to win their second straight CAN-AM Classic title.

Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) made headlines earning her second straight OCAA Player of the Year award. In two years with the Lords, Dewey’s career average is .505, making her the OCAA’s all-time career batting leader, breaking a record that has stood since 1992. Samantha Roelofsen (Alma, Ont.) won the league’s top hitter award and freshman Kayla MacLean (Whitby, Ont.) earned the league’s top pitcher award.

Golf
The golf team earned another podium finish at the provincial championship as the men’s team won bronze, marking their eighth podium finish in nine years. Female golfer Kayleigh Kraemer had an excellent season on the links winning silver at the OCAA championship, while earning invitational titles at Durham and Fanshawe.

Baseball
Durham College hosted the 2009 CIBA National Baseball Championship in October, where the Lords finished in the final four, falling to Cape Breton University 2-1 in extra innings of their semi-final matchup. Nur Osman (Whitby, Ont.) and Jon Thiebaud (Oshawa, Ont.) were named to the CIBA Championship all-star team. The Lords finished in second place in the CIBA Ontario Conference finals.

Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team had a competitive year finishing in third place behind the George Brown Huskies and the national champion Seneca Sting in the Central East Region. Freshman Sebastian Dignoti (Whitby, Ont.) lit up the score sheet scoring 11 goals to finish second in East Region scoring. The Lords also got a chance to play at BMO field this season, home of Toronto FC.

Provincially Ranked
The spotlight has been shining on the entire Durham Lords varsity program this season as all four teams in action (basketball and volleyball) are currently provincially ranked.

After being over-looked for several weeks by the seeding committee, the Lords men’s volleyball program finally jumped into the rankings as they made this week’s biggest move entering at the seventh position. After starting the season 0-2, the Lords have knocked off seven straight victories and are tied for second in the East Region.

Sitting alone in first place of the East Region standings with a 9-1 record is the women’s volleyball team, who jumped up two spots in the rankings to move into the fourth position.

Pulling off a 2-0 week and upsetting the No. 4 nationally ranked St. Lawrence Vikings moved the Lords men’s basketball team up one spot into eighth position in the rankings. The women’s basketball team remained in the tenth position, as they have held a spot in the rankings for six consecutive weeks.

Hall of Fame Year
The OCAA inducted 12 Durham College athletes, coaches and builders into the Hall of Fame this past year at a ceremony in Windsor, Ont. The individuals all made significant contributions to the OCAA throughout their careers while at Durham College. You can visit the OCAA Hall of Fame website at http://ocaa.com/fame/

At the 14th annual Durham College Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Trillium Trails in Oshawa, a pair of great student-athletes were honoured as Stephanie Axford and Rick deBres were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Former Durham College golfer Ryan Hughes was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame this past year while baseball head coach Sam Dempster learned that he will be inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Olympic Spirit
Mandi Doris, captain of the Durham College women’s volleyball team had the honour to carry the Olympic Torch on December 16 in Newcastle, Ont.
