Durham College freshman golfer making an impact on the national scene

BLAINVILLE, Que. –
Entering his first season with the Durham College golf program, Keswick, Ont. native David Lang is showing a lot of promise on the links. This past weekend, Lang made a statement at the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship as he finished in 45th place in the competitive field.

Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont. once again captured Canada’s most prestigious amateur golf crown, carding a final round 4-under par (70-69-68-68-275) 68 to win back-to-back titles at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Burke finished the tournament at 13-under par to become only the fourth competitor in the championship’s history to repeat in a stroke-play format.

The 105th amateur championship, which was held at Club de golf Le Blainvillier in Blainville, Que., consisted of 156 of the top players in the country, including Team Canada members Nick Taylor (Abbotsford, B.C.), the top ranked amateur golfer in the world and a past Canadian Amateur champion, as well as Matt Hill (Bright’s Grove, Ont.), currently listed as the world’s fifth best amateur golfer. Representatives from Australia, England, New Zealand and the United States of America were also in the field.

Entering the final round of play on Sunday, Lang had put together three solid rounds as he sat at 3-over par and in contention to finish in the top ten of the tournament. After a 6-over par 78 on Sunday, Lang finished the championship at a total of 9-over par (75-73-71-78-297), to finish in 45th place, the best finish for a Durham College golfer at the event.

“David proved once again that he can play with the best of the best,” said Mike Duggan, Durham College head coach. “We are looking forward to having him join our team this fall and to make an impact on the collegiate tour.”

This result adds to Lang’s long list of accomplishments in his golf career. Playing varsity golf at Potomac State College in 2007, he earned Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA) All-State Team honours as well a medal at the PCAA Tournament. The twenty year old was named to the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (WPCC) All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. He also holds the school 36-hole record of 144 strokes.

In his career, Lang has competed in over 40 National Junior tournaments, has 11 total victories, six runner-up finishes and 17 top-15 finishes.

The Durham College golf team will begin it’s quest for a national title when they tee off on September 19 at the Fanshawe Invitational. Try outs for the men’s and women’s varsity golf teams begin with a mandatory meeting on September 10, 2009. Full try out details and a tournament schedule is online at www.durhamlords.com.
