DURHAM LORDS MEN’S SOCCER KICK OFF ON AN OFFENSIVE TEAR

OSHAWA, Ont. –
In the opening game of the Ontario College’s Athletic Association (OCAA) 2008 season, the Durham Lords men’s soccer team (1-0 conference, 1-0 overall) defeated the Cambrian Golden Shield 4-1 in front of a large crowd at Vaso’s Field on Saturday afternoon.

Goals scoring was an issue for Stan Bombino’s team last year having only scored 11 goals in 8 games. It was defiantly not a problem on Saturday afternoon for the 2008 squad as the team found the back of the net on four occasions, a feat that they did not accomplish once last season.

Jordan Reeve (Pickering, Ont.) and Bennjamin Vander Eyken (Oshawa, Ont.) scored single goals for Durham late in the first half to give Durham a commanding 2-0 lead at half. Fourth year veteran Jason Walker (Pickering, Ont.) took over the game in the second half as he led the Lords on the scoresheet netting two goals including a penalty kick to give the Lords the 4-1 victory. Andrew MacLeod (Oshawa, Ont.) had a solid game in net, allowing one goal and denying Cambrian strikers on several occasions.

It was an overall team effort with the Durham defense limiting Cambrian’s chances and their offense capitalizing on a lot of their opportunities. Durham will now travel to Welland to take on the Niagara Knights in exhibition action on September 8.
