Watts Closing in on History – Named OCAA Athlete of the Week

Oshawa, Ont. –
Durham College women’s soccer freshman Katie Watts is closing in on the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) single season scoring record of 18 goals. The Oshawa native has started her career off at Durham College on a scoring spree netting 16 goals in seven games, and the Lords still have three games remaining in the season.

The Lords striker is nearing the OCAA single season mark currently shared by Denise Morey of St. Lawrence College (1991) and former Durham College athlete Laura Dixon (2003). Laura Dixon was named a CCAA All-Canadian in her record scoring season, beginning a streak of six All-Canadian’s in five years at Durham College.

With the record in sight for Watt’s, the Lords head to Belleville to take on the Loyalist Lancers on Wednesday, October 1, a team they beat 8-0 on Friday night where Watts managed to score five goals. The Lords will then travel to North York on Saturday, October 1 to face the Seneca Sting before heading home for their regular season finale on Wednesday, October 15 against the Fleming Knights (6 p.m.).

The two-time defending OCAA Champion Durham Lords are in first place in the OCAA Central East Region with a 5-0-2 record. They are also currently ranked fourth in Canada.

Heading into the season, head coach Vaso Vujanovic described Watt’s as a very skillful player with outstanding speed, allowing her to play any forward or middle field position. Spending seven years with the Oshawa Turul soccer club, she had developed into a great offensive player. For the last few years, she has played for Oshawa Kicks and was top scorer in the league. She has earned many awards during her playing career to date and looks to continue her success in the OCAA.

In two games last week, Watts scored five goals against the Loyalist Lancers in an 8-0 Durham victory while scoring the Lords only goal in a 1-1 draw against the Seneca Sting. For her efforts, Watts was named the OCAA Athlete of the Week, becoming the second consecutive Durham College women’s soccer player to win provincial honour as teammate Brittany Micucci won the award a week prior after becoming the DC all-time leading scorer.
