Durham College Golf Team Set To Tee Off at the Provincial Championship

Oshawa, Ont. – The Durham Lords golf team is set to tee off at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Provincial Golf Championship hosted by St. Lawrence College next week. The event gets underway on Monday, September 29 and runs until Wednesday, October 1 at the Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg, Ont.

The Lords have looked impressive playing in several invitational tournaments leading up to the provincial championship and head coach Mike Duggan is confident his team will compete for a medal next week. “The team has really showed signs of strength,” noted Duggan. “We have a good group of freshmen that have pushed the veterans on the team. I am looking forward to a great week of golf.” Duggan just returned from coaching team Canada at the World FISU games in South Africa earlier this month.

Leading the group of veterans is Ian Parker of Port Hope, Ont. Parker averaged 75.5 strokes in four rounds this season, including a second place finish at the Humber Invitational. Freshman Robert Lewis (Cobourg, Ont.) has also looked impressive as he shot consecutive rounds of 74 at the Fanshawe Invitational and DC Open. James Hoffman of Ajax, Ont. had the low round of the team shooting 71 at the Fanshawe Invitational, good enough for a second place finish. Hoffman is averaging 74.5 strokes in four rounds this season.

In the team competition, Durham placed third at the Humber Invitational and DC Open while finishing in fourth place at the Fanshawe and Niagara Invitationals.

The Lords are looking to get back on the medal podium after finishing in fourth place at last year’s provincial championship. Last year was the first year in seven seasons that Durham did not finish with the medal at the championship. Durham has won the men’s team title six times at the provincial championship (1988, 1989, 1993, 1995, 2004, 2005).

The Upper Canada Golf Course, recently voted the number one public course in Central and Eastern Ontario, offers a challenging game of golf in a picturesque setting. The course was rated four stars by Golf Digest. Please visit www.uppercanadagolf.com for the course details.
