New Coaching Era Begins with a Win

Women’s Volleyball: Durham defeated Fleming 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-16)

Oshawa, Ont. –
Shane Christopher began his head coaching career with the Durham Lords on a winning note as the women’s volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Fleming College Thursday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC). Set scores in the exhibition match were 25-11, 25-21 and 25-16.

It was an impressive debut for Christopher as the Lord’s head coach as he stepped in for Durham College Hall of Famer Stan Marchut, who retired after last season. Marchut, the only head coach the program had ever known, recorded 357 wins in his 24 seasons with the Lords. Christopher was an assistant coach with Durham for four seasons prior to this year.

Coach Christopher had a good chance to take a look at his entire lineup in the first game of the year with his player rotating through the lineup. Leading the way for Durham was 2007/08 OCAA All-Star Amanda Falzon (Whitby, Ont.) with five aces along with four kills and a block. Kristen Conner (Ajax, Ont.) also had an impressive game with nine kills while Amanda Doris (Ajax, Ont.) chipped in with six kills and three blocks.

The Lords will now head out to Belleville for an exhibition game with Loyalist on October 1 before heading home for the OCAA season opener against the Algonquin Thunder on Friday, October 3. Game time for the big game at the CRWC is at 6 p.m. The first 100 fans at the home opener will receive a free schedule magnet courtesy of Lovell Drugs!
