Lords Keep the Streak Alive with a 1-1 Draw

Women’s Soccer: Durham tied Seneca 1-1

Oshawa, Ont. –
The undefeated streak at Vaso’s Field lives to see another day as the nationally fourth ranked Durham Lords women’s soccer team tied the Seneca Sting 1-1 on Wednesday night. The Lords extend their unbeaten streak on home field to 27 consecutive games. Durham is also unbeaten in 52 consecutive league games since the beginning of the 2002 season with a 49-0-3 record.

Wednesday night's affair was a battle for first place as the Lords held a one point advantage over Seneca in the standings heading into the match. The game lived up to everyone’s expectations as the two teams battled hard for the entire 90 minutes. Despite the game featuring the league's top four scorers, it was a defensive struggle for the majority of the game.

Calaigh Copeland opened up scoring for Seneca 12 minutes into the game as she beat goalkeeper Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) for her seventh goal of the year. Durham stormed back just three minutes later as freshman Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) netted her eleventh goal of the season, finishing a beautiful pass from veteran midfielder Jennifer Michalicka (Pickering, Ont.).

With both teams allowing early goals, team defence was made a priority for the remainder of the game as the two teams would end up tied 1-1 after the referee's final whistle. Seneca threw everything they had towards the net but Visser was unbeatable keeping the game all-squared.

Durham remains in first place in the Central East Region with a 4-0-2 record in conference play. Seneca still trails Durham by only a single point with a 4-1-1 record.

It will be a quick turnaround for Durham as they take on the Loyalist Lancers Friday Night (September 26) at Vaso’s Field in league action. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.
