St. Clair Sweeps Durham in a Battle for First at Kinsmen Stadium
Game One: St. Clair defeated Durham 4-2
Game Two: St. Clair defeated Durham 11-10
Oshawa, Ont. – The St. Clair Saints jumped over the Durham College men’s baseball team in the CIBA Ontario Standings Sunday afternoon as they swept the Lords in doubleheader action at Kinsmen Stadium.
The Lords (8-4 conference) sit a single game back of the Saints (9-3 conference) in the standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The teams will meet for one more series in Windsor next Sunday to close out the regular season. The winner of the regular season pennant will receive a bye and home field advantage in the CIBA Ontario finals while second place will advance to the semi-finals, scheduled to run from October 4-5.
Another poor start plagued Durham in game one as St. Clair jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. St. Clair added some insurance in the fourth inning and went on to win by a final score of 4-2. Codey Seremack picked up the win for St. Clair while James Rowe was handed his first loss of the season.
Game two was a wild match up with both teams picking up a number of hits, runs and errors. Despite Durham recording at least one run in all but one inning, the Saints still came out with a win behind the strength of a five run fifth inning. In the end, St. Clair came out with an 11-10 victory, sending the Lords fans home in disappointment.
Matt Rustkulka of St. Clair nailed down his third win of the year, to tie him with Durham pitcher Gary Rose for the most wins in the country.
Jareth Vallier and Jonathan Thiebaud had good days at the plate for Durham. Vallier went 3-for-7 on the day with three RBI’s and a run scorded while Thiebaud was 3-for-7 with a home run, three RBI’s and three runs scored.
Durham will now head to Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon take on Erie Community College in an exhibition doubleheader before wrapping up the regular season next weekend with games on the road against York and St. Clair.
