Lords Women’s Soccer Play to a Draw in Ottawa

Women’s Soccer: Durham tied Algonquin 1-1

Oshawa, Ont. –
The Durham Lords women’s soccer team (nationally third ranked) were put to the test in the Nation’s capital on Friday night as they played to a 1-1 draw against the Algonquin Thunder.

With the tie, Durham continues their regular season unbeaten streak which began at the beginning of the 2002 season. Since the opener that season, the Lords are 48-0-2 in regular season play. The two ties have both come against Algonquin College.

In tonight’s match-up after a scoreless first half, Algonquin broke the ice with a goal at the 47 minute mark. Shortly after, Durham was able to rebound off the foot of freshmen sensation Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) who scored her league leading sixth goal of the season at the 62 minute mark to tie the game at one goal apiece.

With 15 minutes left in the match, Durham had their back against the wall as Algonquin was awarded a penalty kick. With the game on the line, veteran Durham goalkeeper Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) made a tremendous save to keep the all square. When the referee blew the final whistle, the teams found themselves in a deadlock, both walking away with a point.

Durham is now 3-0-1 on the season and will play La Cite tomorrow afternoon. Algonquin also remained undefeated at 1-0-1 and have a game against Seneca scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Seneca is currently one point behind Durham in the standings with one game in hand.
