Home Opener a Big Success for Durham College

Women’s Fastball: Durham defeated Mohawk 8-0

Oshawa, Ont. –
The Durham Lords women’s fastball home opener was a big success on Friday night. In front of a packed house at Durham Field including DC fastball alumni, the Lords cruised to an 8-0 shutout over the Mohawk Mountaineers.

There was plenty of action on the night with the home opening win taking centre stage. A special presentation was made to head coach Jim Nemish prior to the game in recognition of his 300th win of his career last season. Durham College President Don Lovisa was also on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch while former fastball players participated in an alumni game.

The 2008 version of the Lords put on a show against Mohawk in a rematch of last season’s championship final. The Lords picked up six runs in the second inning and cruised the rest of the way picking up the 8-0 win.

Danielle Smith (Oshawa, Ont.) pitched a brilliant game, allowing only three hits and a single walk for the complete game shutout. She also recorded eight strikeouts in her second win of the year. Smith also contributed at the plate going 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Also having a big night for Durham was catcher Shannon Ferguson. The Brockville native went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Freshmen Karie Neddo (Spencerville, Ont.) and Erica Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) each recorded a hit while combining for three runs and two RBI’s.

The win for Durham extended their winning streak over OCAA opponents to 18 games, while pushing their winning streak over Mohawk College to 17 games.

The Lords will be back in action tomorrow at Durham Field as the CAN-AM Classic will be taking place over the weekend. Visit www.durhamlords.com for a full tournament schedule.
