DC Men’s Soccer Fall Short to Defending Champs

Men's Soccer: Algonquin defeated Durham 2-0

Ottawa, Ont. –
The four-time defending OCAA Champions escaped with a victory over the Durham Lords on Friday night as they narrowly defeated the green and gold by a score of 2-0.

Both teams opened up the first half with plenty of scoring chances at both ends of the pitch. Algonquin caught a lucky break at the 32 minute mark when one of their players fell inside the box and the official had thought a Durham player had committed a foul. Algonquin capitalized on their fortunate opportunity and scored on the penalty kick to go ahead 1-0.

The teams continued into the second half trading a number of scoring opportunities with the action going end to end. Every time Algonquin had looked as if they were going to go ahead 2-0, goalkeeper Andrew MacLeod (Oshawa, Ont.) made an excellent save to keep the game in reach.

At the 75 minute mark with Durham pressing for the equalizer, Algonquin was able to catch Durham shorthanded on defence and score on a fast break. With that, Algonquin would go up for good and go on to win by a final score of 2-0.

”We played exceptionally well,” commented Lords head coach Stan Bombino. “We were in the match the entire 90 minutes wand it could have gone either way. I am proud of the way my team played against an excellent Algonquin team.”

Durham is now 2-2-0 on the season with a game in Ottawa against La Cite scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
