DC Women’s Fastball Clinches Regular Season Pennant

Game One: Durham defeated St. Clair 6-5
Game Two: Durham defeated St. Clair 7-4

Windsor, Ont. –
The Durham Lords women’s fastball team used a pair of comeback wins over St. Clair College on Saturday afternoon to clinch their twenty-third overall OCAA regular season title. For head coach Jim Nemish and the Lords, it marks their eleventh regular season pennant in the last twelve years.

St. Clair and Durham played two tight games, with both of them being decided in the seventh inning (game summaries below). Durham is now 9-0 on the season as the Saints sit in second place with a 7-3 record. The Lords won the season series over St. Clair 3-0.

Durham will now close out the regular season with a trio of games against Conestoga College next week. The team will travel to Kitchener on Tuesday, October 7 for a single game and then return to Oshawa for a doubleheader on Thursday, October 9 at Durham Field. First pitch on Thursday is at 6 p.m.

Durham will also head back to Windsor one more time this season as St. Clair College will host the 2008 OCAA provincial championship from October 17-18. Durham will enter the championship as the two-time defending provincial champions.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One

Durham 6 St. Clair 5

Trailing 5-2 in the seventh inning of game one, the Lords rallied from behind as they sent eight batters to the plate enroute to scoring four runs to take a 6-5 lead. Facing the core of the St. Clair lineup in the bottom of the seventh, Lords starting pitcher Danielle Smith got three straight outs to pick up her fourth win of the year. Smith was also a force at the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Amanda Gruning went 2-for-3 for Durham with three RBIs.

Heading into the seventh inning, the teams found themselves tied at four runs apiece. With two Lords runners on base, freshman Erica Dewey came up with a two-run triple to put the Lords ahead. She would later score in the inning giving Durham a 7-4 lead and eventually the win. Dewey would end up 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Erin Dewey also had a great game at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
