DC Men’s Soccer Shutout Seneca - Playoff Hopes Still Alive
Men's Soccer: Durham defeated Seneca 1-0
North York, Ont. – In a do or die situation Saturday afternoon in North York, head coach Stan Bombino knew he had to get the most out of his Durham College men’s soccer team in order to have a chance at qualifying for the post season. His team fought hard for the entire match and would end up coming out with a 1-0 win and their playoff dreams alive and well.
In what is considered by many as the “group of death”, the Lords are now tied with Seneca for second place with matching 5-3-1 records. George Brown leads the division with a 6-1-2 record. If the Lords and Sting were to finish the regular season tied in points, Durham would advance to the postseason as they won the season series between the two teams 2-0. The top two teams from each division qualify for the quarterfinals.
Head coach Stan Bombino described the match as very tactical with both teams fighting hard for the entire match. There was plenty of scoring opportunities, but it was Casey La Russa’s (Wendover, Ont.) goal at the 10 minute mark that was the difference maker. For La Russa, it was his first goal of the season. Andrew MacLeod (Oshawa, Ont.) posted his second shutout of the year.
It was a great victory for the Lords as they head into the final stages of the season with their playoff fate in their own hands. The Lords have matches against Centennial (2-4-0) and Fleming (3-2-3) remaining in the regular season. Durham will take on the Colts in Scarborough on Monday, October 6 before heading home on Wednesday, October 15 (8 p.m.) for their game against the Knights. A win in Scarborough on Monday would eliminate Centennial from playoff contention.
