Lords Cannot Weather the Algonquin Storm in Home Opener
Women’s Volleyball – Algonquin defeated Durham 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23)
Oshawa, Ont. – In front of a packed house at Durham College, the Algonquin Thunder spoiled the party as they defeated the Lords 3-1 in the team’s 2008 regular season home opener. Set scores in the match were 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23.
The two teams split the first two sets to head into the third in a 1-1 tie. That is when fourth year left-side Algonquin hitter Ashlie Cormack stole the show propelling Algonquin to a 3-1 win. Cormack would finish the game with 11 points, including 10 kills and 1 ace.
Durham fought hard in the fourth and final set, but too many mistakes caught up with the team as the Thunder would win their first match of the year.
Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.) had a stellar game for Durham registering 16 points (15 kills, 1 ace). Captain Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) also had an impressive 2008 regular season debut scoring 13 points (8 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces). On the defensive side of the ball, Melissa Reinhardt (Port Perry, Ont.) led the team with 20 digs.
It was a good test for head coach Shane Christopher’s team in their regular season debut as Algonquin is always a perennial powerhouse in the OCAA East Region. Durham will now face the La Cite Coyotes on Saturday, October 4 at the CRWC. Game time is at 1 p.m.
