Lords Walk Away with Plenty of Hardware at the OCAA Award Banquet
Ottawa, Ont. – The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) announced the major award winners and league all-stars for men’s and women’s soccer on Thursday night to kick-off the 2008 OCAA Championships. Durham would not leave empty handed as the Lords won a total of eleven awards on the night.
Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) was awarded with the OCAA women’s soccer Rookie of the Year award as well as being recognized as the league and regional scoring champion. In 2008, Watts set a new OCAA benchmark scoring 20 goals in 11 games this season. The OCAA League Scoring Champion has now worn the Green and Gold for the past four seasons as Jana Cryderman took home top honours in 2005, Brittany Micucci in 2006, Katie Szeghalmi in 2007 and now Katie Watts in 2008.
Fifth year veteran goalkeeper Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) was also recognized for her outstanding play as she won the league top goalkeeper award. This is the second consecutive season that the Durham netminder won the award. Visser and Watts were also honoured as league all-stars.
On the men’s side, Andrew MacLeod was named the league’s top goalkeeper. Heading into the year, critics questioned whether or not MacLeod would be able to fill the shoes of former goalie Fabrice Kabongo, but the Oshawa native was up to the challenge having a great season for the Lords and being recognized provincially for his efforts. Kabongo won the top goalkeeper award last year.
A new award was introduced this season as each conference named a top defensive player, and it was 2006 CCAA All-Canadian and Durham College captain Trevor Delpippo (Courtice, Ont.) walking away with the award in the Central East/East region. Durham was also recognized as the top defensive team while Jason Walker (Pickering, Ont.) and Bennjamin Vander Eyken (Oshawa, Ont.) were named league all-stars.
The Durham College women’s soccer streak of five straight years of having a CCAA All-Canadian came to a halt as Ashley Docking of Seneca and Joanna Alexopulos of Humber won the honour. The Lords will hope their provincial title streak will not come end over the weekend as they look to win their third straight championship. The Lords will begin their quest for gold on Friday as they meet up with Humber in the semi finals at 10 a.m.
All championship games will be streamed online at www.sportslive.ca.
