DC Women’s Soccer Looking for a ‘Three-Peat’ in Ottawa!
Ottawa, Ont. – The Durham College women’s soccer team will look to win their third straight provincial title this weekend as they will compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women’s Soccer Championship in Ottawa, Ont. Algonquin College hosted the provincial championship last season, when Durham won their fifth overall women’s soccer provincial title.
The Lords managed to qualify for their twelfth consecutive OCAA Championship with a 1-0 win over the West Region Champion Lambton Lions in the quarter finals. Durham will now look to beat the Humber Hawks in the semi finals on Friday (10 a.m.). Humber won the Central East Region with an 8-0-2 record and defeated the Fleming Knights 5-0 to advance to the championship. Last year, Durham shutout Humber 2-0 in the championship final.
Durham’s offense is led by freshman Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) who scored a record setting 19 goals during the regular season. Watt’s also scored the lone goal in the quarter finals to book Durham’s trip to Ottawa. Brittany Micucci (Newmarket, Ont.) and Jennifer Michalicka (Pickering, Ont.) also had outstanding offensive seasons scoring eleven and eight goals respectively. The Lords finished the regular season scoring 50 goals, the most of any team in the OCAA.
Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) will be in net for the Lords as she is making her final OCAA Championship appearance in her fifth year. The veteran keeper saw plenty of action throughout the season making key saves as the Lords recorded five shutouts and held their opponents to one goal or less in every game but one.
If the Lords hope to advance to the championship final, they must find a way to beat the Hawks defence, which allowed a league low two goals during the regular season. Humber also had a well balanced offensive attack with nine players scoring two or more goals throughout the season. Leading the team in scoring was freshman forward Keyla Moreno (Toronto, Ont.) who found the back of the net seven times.
In the other semi-final match-up, the Seneca Sting will meet the hosting Algonquin Thunder (12:30 p.m.). Algonquin defeated the Seneca 1-0 in the early stages of the regular season.
The OCAA Championship Awards Banquet will kick-off the championship on Thursday night where league all-stars and other major award winners will be announced.
There will be plenty of soccer action going on in Ottawa this weekend as Algonquin will also be hosting the OCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. The winner of the both the men’s and women’s events will advance to the CCAA National Championship, hosted by Thompson River University in Kamloops, B.C.
All games this weekend will be streamed online at www.sportslive.ca.
