DC Women’s Basketball Results – Lords to Honour and Remember Bonnie Slaughter
Oshawa, Ont. - The Durham College athletic department will dedicate the 2008-09 women's basketball season in honour of Lords former star Bonnie Slaughter, who tragically passed away earlier this year.
At the Lords home opener on Tuesday, October 21 at 6 p.m., a special ceremony and moment of silence will be held in Bonnie's honour. As part of the ceremony, Durham College will present the game ball to Slaughter's Fiancé Bill Crowdis and young son Colton.
Members of the Durham Women's Basketball team will pay tribute to Slaughter and her memory by wearing a black patch with her number 15 on their uniforms. Slaughter's number will also be displayed on the glass backboards in the Durham College Varsity Gymnasium.
“Dedicating the season to Bonnie in her memory is an important thing to do... important for Bonnie, important for her family, important to the team and important for Durham College,” stated Ken Babcock, Athletic Director.
In order to let people know what type of athlete, student and person Bonnie was, a special tribute section will also be included in every home game program throughout the season.
The tributes will take place during the 2008-09 varsity season, but the athletic department is opting to pay a respect to Slaughter that will last for decades as the Women's Basketball Most Valuable Player award will be renamed after her.
“We will be renaming our top women's basketball MVP award, the ‘Bonnie Slaughter Memorial DC Women's Basketball Most Valuable Player Award' in Bonnie's memory,” stated Babcock. “Naming one of our important awards in Women's Basketball is very fitting as it will carry on her legacy and the impact she had on DC Women's Basketball. It is very appropriate that it bares her name as she was the only three time winner of the award.”
At Durham College, Slaughter was named a CCAA All-Canadian and finished her career as the second highest scorer in OCAA women's basketball history. She also set OCAA records for most three-pointers in a season (43) and most free throws in a season with (96). Slaughter also earned the title of East Region scoring champion in both the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons.
Slaughter's parents still live in Oshawa, while she is survived in Norwood by her two-year old son Colton and fiancé Bill Crowdis, a former standout with the men's basketball program at Durham and current coach of the men's team at Fleming College in Peterborough.
