National Semi-Final: University of New Brunswick defeated Durham 6-2

Montreal, Quebec – The Durham College men’s baseball team’s national title dream was erased on Sunday as the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Cougars defeated the Lords 6-2 in the CIBA national semi-finals.

Although head coach Sam Dempster was disappointed with the loss, he had nothing but positive things to say about his team which would finish in the final four of the national championship. “I’m extremely proud of my guys. They battled all the way and we had an opportunity to get back into the game with the tying run on the on-deck circle.”

UNB got off to a hot start against Durham, scoring six runs in the first two innings off starting pitcher Shaun Slemko. Julian Daligadu and Lucas Sharpe would come into the game in relief, shutting out the Cougars the rest of the way but it just wasn’t enough as Durham was held to just two runs, putting an end to their 2008 season.

UNB would go on to win their second consecutive CIBA national title later in the day, as they defeated McGill University 5-3 in the national title game. McGill advanced to the championship game with a 5-4 win over St. Clair College from Windsor, Ont.

Durham finished the championship with a 2-2 record. This was the fourth straight year and the seventh time in the programs history that the team qualified for the National Championship.

2008 was a very successful year for the Lords on the diamond as they finished with an overall record of 20-10 and went on to win their fourth straight CIBA Ontario Championship. The twenty wins for Sam Dempster’s club is the second highest total in Durham College history, just behind the 1999 team which went 23-11.
