Windsor, Ont. – It was a disappointing end to a great season for the Durham College women’s fastball team as they were defeated by the hosting St. Clair Saints in the final two games of the OCAA Championship finals, as the Lords earned the silver medal.
The championship win marked the second championship for the Saints, who last won the crown in 2005. Durham and St. Clair have combined to win the past seven OCAA provincial titles.
Durham went undefeated in the championship round in the double knock-out format, forcing St. Clair to need to beat Durham twice in order to take the Gold medal.
St. Clair came out in convincing fashion in the opening game and held an 11-2 advantage in the 5th inning. Durham made the game quite close loading the bases in the 7th inning before falling 11-8. St. Clair capped the day with a great pitching performance from Kandice Bagley who threw a complete game four-hitter and earned a 2-0 shut-out win.
Game two was a pitchers duel as Danielle Smith took the mound for Durham and Kandice Bagley throwing once again for the Saints. The Saints managed to score one run in the first and another fifth, both off errors to take a 2-0 lead. That is all they would need as St. Clair would shutout the league’s top offence enroute to claiming the provincial title.
Danielle Smith of the Lords would earn the championship top pitcher award while Candice Gatecliffe (St. Clair) was named championship MVP.
Finishing the season with silver medal, Durham extends their medal streak at the OCAA championship to 12 seasons. The Lords have won 26 medals at the OCAA Championship (14 gold, 8 silver, 4 bronze), the most of any college in league history.
