David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament a Huge Success

Oshawa, Ont. – The 32nd annual David Stewart Tip-Off tournament was a huge success as college basketball fans witnessed plenty of great games with fantastic finishes on day two of the tournament. The Durham Lords fell just short of winning their first tip-off title in eleven years as they were defeated by the Fanshawe Falcons 75-72 in the tournament’s final game.

With 15 minutes left in the title game, it looked as if Durham was down and out as they trailed the Falcons by 20 points (52-32). Showing their resiliency, the Lords chipped away at the Falcon lead, cutting it to just seven points with five minutes left in the game.

Durham continued to roll as they went on another mini-run with big baskets coming from veterans Courtney Small, Tyler Pelley and Anthony Batchelor, as they managed to tie the game at 69-69.

With an Anthony Batchelor free throw, Durham actually grabbed a 70-69 lead with just 1:24 left on the clock. The teams fought hard in the final minutes of the game as they would end up tied again (72-72) down the stretch. Fanshawe would make a clutch shot to give the Falcons a 75-72 lead and with the seconds winding down, a Durham three-point attempt would just rim out, giving Fanshawe the tournament title with a 75-72 win.

Matt Fennell of the Falcons was awarded tournament MVP honours while veteran teammate Jabari Cooper was named a tournament all-star. Courtney Small and Anthony Batchelor were awarded as tournament all-stars for the Lords.

Earlier in the day Durham defeated Vanier College 75-58 to advance to the tournament final. It was the Lords first trip to the title game since 1998.

All-in-all, it was a very entertaining day of basketball as three of the final four games ended with the winning team up by three points or less. Centennial College won the consolation final with a 69-67 win over George Brown College.
