NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SUMMARY
Game One – Durham defeated Atlantic Baptist University 4-3
Game Two – Durham defeated McGill University 8-0
Game Three – St. Clair defeated Durham 4-2
National Semi-Final: Durham College vs. University of New Brunswick (Sunday – 11 a.m.)
Montreal, Ont. – The Durham Lords men’s baseball team is just one win away from playing for the national championship as they qualified for the CIBA National Semi-Finals in Montreal, Quebec. The semi-final game will take place on Sunday morning as the Lords take on the defending CIBA National Champion University of New Brunswick Cougars at 11 a.m.
The Lords finished 2-1 in round robin play, matching UNB for second place and a trip to the semi-finals. The St. Clair Saints finished at 3-0 and will take on the winner of the fourth place tie breaker (Lafleche College vs. McGill) in the other semi-final. The winners of tomorrow’s games will advance to the CIBA national title game, scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m.
The Lords split their games on day two at the championship, as they came up with an 8-0 win over hosting McGill University followed by a 4-2 to the St. Clair Saints (game summaries below). Their win over McGill was highlighted by an excellent pitching performance by Gary Rose, who pitched a complete game three-hitter while striking out 14 batters.
With a win in the semi-finals, it would be Durham’s first trip to the national title game. The only year Durham finished in the top three at the national championship was back in 1994 when the team won bronze.
This year is Durham’s fourth consecutive trip to the national championship. The Lords finished in fourth place in 2005 and 2006, while finishing in fifth place in 2007. Head coach Sam Dempster hopes his team will be able to make the next step and bring the title to Oshawa for the first time!
