Erin Dewey Named OCAA Women’s Fastball Player of the Year
Windsor, Ont. – Top honours were handed out at the OCAA Fastball Championship banquet at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts in Windsor on Thursday evening to kick off the 2008 provincial championship.
Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) of the Durham Lords collected the most hardware earning Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and League Batting Champion title honours as well as being named a league all-star. Erin led her team both offensively and defensively and was referred to as a true competitive athlete who leads by example with her play, and is always there to pick up her teammates.
Dewey led the league in hitting with a .543 batting average, the highest the league has seen since 1998. She also finished first in hits (25), first in RBIs (21) and third in runs scored (20). Her 25 hits on the year tied the OCAA all-time record for most hits in a season, originally set by Shannon Glover of Mohawk in 2002.
Erin joined Durham this season after a successful high school career in Port Hope where she won numerous awards in her athletic career including being named the school's Athlete of the Year.
Teammate Carolyn Moore (Oshawa, Ont.) was also named as a league all-star during the banquet. In her second year with the Lords, the shortstop finished the year with a .455 batting average with 20 hits, 21 runs scored and 15 RBIs. Moore was also outstanding defensively, helping Durham to lead the league in fewest runs against.
The Lords entire team was honoured as the 2008 OCAA regular season champions. Durham finished the regular season with a 12-0 record to clinch their twenty-third overall OCAA regular season title. For head coach Jim Nemish and the Lords, it marks their eleventh regular season pennant in the last twelve years.
The team will open up the championship on Friday at 1 p.m. against the Seneca Sting (full schedule below).
Mohawk College was also represented on stage, as Jenny Koschanow was voted the leagues top pitcher. This was the first time she had won the award after four seasons in the league. She was also joined by her coach, Brian Weller, who was named the OCAA Coach of the Year.
