Watts Breaks OCAA Single-Season Scoring Record – Lords Cruise to a 10-0 Win

Women’s Soccer: Durham defeated Loyalist 10-0

Belleville, Ont. –
Durham College freshman Katie Watts (Oshawa, Ont.) scored three goals, breaking the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) single-season scoring record, to lead the Lords women's soccer team to a 10-0 shutout victory at Loyalist College on Wednesday afternoon. Watts now has 19 goals in eight games this season, surpassing the former record of 18 goals that had been held for 17 seasons.

Denise Morey of St. Lawrence College originally set the benchmark of 18 goals in eight games during the 1991 OCAA varsity season. Durham College standout Laura Dixon later matched that total in 2003, scoring 18 goals in eight games. This season, Watts has scored 19 goals in eight games, setting the new single-season record.

It has been an unbelievable rookie season for the Oshawa native enroute to establishing the new single-season high. Watts has scored three or more goals in four games and has found the back of the net in seven of eight games. She will also have the opportunity to add to her record goal total as the Lords still have three games remaining in the regular season.

The Lords led from start to finish in today’s game as they cruised to the 10-0 victory. Watts was not the only player to get a hat-trick as teammate Jennifer Michalicka (Pickering, Ont.) netted three goals, bringing her season total to seven. Brittany Micucci (Newmarket, Ont.) added two goals to the cause as did freshman Katerina Noble (Uxbridge, Ont.), who scored her first two goals of the season the green and gold.

Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) and Kylie Bracken (Ajax, Ont.) split time in net, recording the Lords fourth shutout of the season.

With the win, Durham moves to 6-0-2 and sit in first place in the Central East Region standings. Seneca College only trails Durham by a single point, as they hold a 6-1-1 record. The two teams will meet on Saturday, October 4 in North York for a 2 p.m. kick-off. Although five of the league’s top six scorers will be featured in Saturday’s match-up, the team’s last meeting at Durham College was a defensive struggle playing to a 1-1 draw.

Watt's record breaking season adds another accomplishment to the books for Vaso Vujanovic’s Durham Lords. Durham has won four of the last five OCAA provincial titles, as well as winning a bronze medal at the 2007 CCAA national championship.

Individually, the Lords have had six CCAA All-Canadians in the last five years. Also, in the last five seasons, the OCAA Payer of the Year award has come from Durham College (2004 -Laura Dixon, 2005 - Kara Campbell, 2006 - Nicole Stephens, 2007 - Amanda Durno and 2008 - Katie Szeghalmi), a feat that had never been achieved in OCAA soccer.

The OCAA League Scoring Champion has also worn the Green and Gold for the past three seasons as Jana Cryderman took home top honours in 2005, Brittany Micucci in 2006 and Katie Szeghalmi in 2007.
