Lords Fall Short to the Seneca Sting

The Durham Lords Women’s basketball team fell to a 1-2 conference record after losing to the Seneca Sting on Tuesday night by a final score of 61-47.

Seneca was able to slow down the Lords offense by utilizing a full court press to their advantage. The Sting were able to capitalize on the turnovers forced by their press, scoring 29 points off of Durham’s miscues. At half the Sting led the Lords by a score of 40-23.

Durham was able to get within 13 points at the 14:28 mark in the second half, but unfortunately were not able to get any closer as Seneca would pull out the 61-47 victory. The Lords had a strong second half, winning it by a score of 24-21. Head coach Tim Baulk (ChPC) was pleased with his team’s effort as they refused to give in to the Sting, playing hard to the final buzzer.

Durham was able to get to the free throw line many times throughout the game due to their aggressiveness. The Lords got to the line a total of 25 times, while the Seneca Sting only took eight free throws the whole game. Unfortunately, Durham shot only 28 percent from the charity stripe.

A positive the Lords can take out of this game was their rebounding. They were able to out rebound the opposition by ten (47-37). It was a team effort with four players collecting five or more rebounds.

Durham’s Kim Slack (Ajax, Ont.) had a very strong game, offensively and defensively as she was one rebound shy of a double-double. She scored 11 points while collecting nine rebounds and four steals. Also having a strong overall game was Jill Leistra (Chatham, Ont.). She scored 10 points while also grabbing six rebounds and three steals.

Leading the way for Seneca was 2006-07 CCAA All-Canadian Natasha Thombs with 15 points and Ashley Docking who scored 12.

The Lords look to bounce back on Wednesday, November 12 on the road when they play George Brown in Toronto (6 p.m.). Durham will play host to the DC Big 8 Classic, which will run at the CRWC from November 14-15.
