Lords win sixth straight match with a win over Boreal
Women’s Volleyball: Durham defeated Boreal 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13)
Sudbury, Ont. – Make it six in a row! The Durham College women’s volleyball team extended their winning streak to six straight conference matches as they defeated the Boreal Viperes 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Set scores in the match were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-13.
Durham is now 6-4 heading into the holiday break and is one of the hottest teams in the province. The “Sudbury sweep” over the weekend pushes Durham into fourth place in the East Region standings, only two points behind the Seneca Sting (7-3).
It was good match for Durham on Saturday with all of the players seeing court time. Captain Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) led the team with 16 points, recording seven kills, five blocks and four aces. For Doris, it was her third consecutive game with five blocks, with her career total increasing to 115. She is now fourth all-time in OCAA career blocks and is only 15 behind Megan Stacey of Nipissing University for third place on the charts.
Other top scorers from DC includde Samantha Roelofsen (Alma, Ont.) with seven points, while Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.) and Steph Bagot (Barrie, Ont.) both notched five points apiece. Freshman Julie Hakkesteegt (Brighton, Ont.) had a strong game with four kills, two aces and two blocks.
Boreal had trouble with Amanda Falzon (Whitby, Ont.) from beyond the service line, as six of her 11 points were aces.
Head coach Shane Christopher was pleased with his sides effort over the weekend, as the Lords played strong defensively making a number of quality digs. “Defence is something we continue to work on,” commented the first year head coach. “We are right where we want to be heading into the new year.”
On the men’s side, the Lords swept the Viperes 3-0 with set scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-17 making it six conference wins in a row as well. The team is now 7-2 in conference play and is a tie with Seneca College for second place in the region.
Both Durham teams will head into the new year with a lot of momentum on their sides. The teams have looked dominant throughout the month of November making other teams take notice.
The Lords will both open up 2009 with important conference matches against Seneca College on Thursday, January 8 at the CRWC. Game times are 6 and 8 p.m. The women’s team will also host the Killer Instinct Cup that same weekend.
