Memorable night at Durham College as two greats were inducted in the Hall of Fame
Oshawa, Ont. - Wednesday night was a very special evening at Durham College as the Department of Athletics held the 13th Annual DC Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in the beautiful Upper Gallery of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
A pair of great student-athletes from Oshawa were honoured as Ron Winterink and Mario Bruno were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The event was a huge success as it was witnessed by invited guests that included family and friends, current Hall of Famers, staff, faculty, administration, past athletes of the year, student association representatives, current and past coaches, media representatives, team captains, members of the alumni association and President Don Lovisa. It was the largest turnout the thirteen years of the DC Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony!
“It was a truly memorable evening as we inducted two more of our greats into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame,” noted Athletic Director Ken Babcock. “It was wonderful to see such a big turnout at the event of alumni, media, staff, past hall of famers, past athletes of the year, coaches and friends of the program. What a great night for everyone involved and what a big night for Ron and Mario and their families in attendance!”
Winterink and Bruno became the 33rd and 34th members of the Hall of Fame.
RON WINTERINK – Student Athlete Category
Men’s Soccer & Basketball 1979-82
Ron Winterink was born in Oshawa in 1959 and came to Durham College in 1979 to pursue his college education and also compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). Ron was a standout student-athlete at DC in, not one, but two varsity sports – soccer and basketball. During his three year post secondary athletic career, the Paul Dwyer CHS graduate achieved provincial award status in both sports. He quickly established himself across the province, leading his Lords soccer team to the first of two East Regional Championships and an OCAA Bronze medal in 1979-80, at the same time leading the DC basketball program in scoring his freshman season with 12.3 points per game.
Over the three years in OCAA soccer, Ron scored 21 career goals in 19 conference games, including leading the team with 9 markers in 1980-81. He then led DC to its first ever OCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Gold Medal in 1980-81. On the basketball hardwood, Ron was equally as impressive averaging a double-double over his 3 year collegiate basketball career 11.2 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game. He also was recognized as an OCAA Provincial League All-star in his final year and helped start the tradition of excellence that DC Men’s Basketball has enjoyed for the past 2 decades. Capping off a terrific collegiate career by being named Durham College Male Athlete of the Year in 1981-82. An outstanding two-sport star for Durham College and very deserving of Hall of Fame status.
MARIO BRUNO – Student Athlete Category
Men’s Soccer 1984-87
Mario Bruno was born in Oshawa in 1964 and came to Durham College in the fall of 1984 to pursue his college education and also compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). The Central Collegiate High school graduate quickly established himself in the OCAA Men’s Soccer circle as one of the most talented offensive players in the province. He led the vaunted Durham College Men’s Soccer program in scoring all three years he competed, finishing with an all-time DC career school record of 32 goals, which still ranks 5th all-time in OCAA Men’s Soccer history. His highlight season for scoring was 1986-87 where he led the team and the entire OCAA in scoring with 17 goals – still the current DC all-time single season record.
That same season he was named an OCAA Provincial League All-star. His scoring talent helped lead a strong DC soccer program to three consecutive OCAA East Division Championship titles from 1984 to 1987, and three consecutive OCAA Provincial Championship medals. (Silver medal in 1984-85, and Bronze Medal in both 1985-86 and 1986-87) During that 3 year span the Lords recorded just one loss in regular season conference play going 24-1-1. A true soccer scoring legend at Durham College and very deserving of Hall of Fame status.
