Top Women’s Basketball Teams Set to Take Part in the DC Big 8 Classic

Oshawa, Ont. – Eight of the top teams in women’s basketball will meet at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre this weekend as the Durham College Athletic Department is set to host the Big 8 Classic.

The Seneca Sting (North York, Ont.) enter the tournament as the two-time defending Big 8 Classic Champions. Seneca defeated the Fanshawe Falcons (London, Ont.) 86-59 in last year’s final, who will also be participating in the two-day tournament. Last year’s Ontario champions, the Sheridan Bruins (Brampton, Ont.), head into the tournament as the team to beat. The nationally ranked Bruins have been unstoppable this season with a 5-0 record against OCAA opponents. They will meet up with the Jamestown Jayhawks (Jamestown, NY) in the first round of the tournament.

The hosting Durham Lords (Oshawa, Ont.) will match up against the Humber Hawks (Etobicoke, Ont.) in the first round of play. The Lords lost in the consolation finals of the 2007 Big 8 Classic and will look to rebound after a slow start to 2008. Rounding out this year’s field are the George Brown Huskies (Toronto, Ont.) and Loyalist Lancers (Belleville, Ont.).

Four games will take place throughout the afternoon on Friday starting at 2 p.m. The teams will then be split up into a two brackets (winners/losers) for action on Saturday. The championship final is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
