Humber Cup Action Wraps Up

Etobicoke, Ont. – The Durham Lords men’s and women’s volleyball teams took part in the Humber Cup Invitational over the weekend in Etobicoke, Ont. Both teams looked impressive at times but would end up falling one set short of qualifying for the playoffs. The hosting Humber Hawks would end up winning the tournament on women’s side while the Mohawk Mountaineers would win on the men’s side.
 
After a 1-5 start to the tournament, Durham finished strong on day two sweeping their opponents 4-0 to finish with a 5-5 record. The Lords picked up a 2-0 win over Nipissing University to start the day with set scores of 25-22, 25-22. The Lords would then follow up that performance with a big 2-0 win over Georgian College, sweeping the Grizzlies 25-12 and 25-22. The Lords finished one set back of the Hawks who finished at 6-4 for the fourth and final playoff position. The Mohawk Mountaineers would eventually win the tournament defeating Algonquin College in the finals.

It was the complete opposite for the Lords women’s team as they lost all four sets on Saturday, slipping to 4-6 in the round robin. The Lords were defeated by Nipissing 2-0 (25-14, 25-11) and then Humber 2-0 (25-18, 25-14) to close out the round robin. Humber would beat Mohawk in the tournament finals.
