Two Major Provincial Events Coming to Durham College in 2009

Oshawa, ON – The Durham College athletic department is pleased to announce that the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association has approved it’s bid to host the 2009 Men’s and Women’s Provincial Volleyball Championships as well as the 2009 OCAA Basketball All-Star Games.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to host two provincial events of this magnitude,” commented Ken Babcock, Durham College Athletic Director. “It will be a great opportunity to showcase our campus facilities, hospitality and the entire community to the rest of the province.”

For the first time in almost ten years, Durham College will host Ontario’s top collegiate volleyball players at the 2009 OCAA Men’s and Women’s Provincial Championship. The event will showcase excellent volleyball action, as the top four men’s and women’s teams from across Ontario will battle it out for the provincial title and a bid to the National Championships. The two-day event is scheduled to take place on February 27-28, 2009. Durham last hosted the OCAA women’s volleyball championship in 2000.

Durham will also host the 22nd annual OCAA Basketball All-Star Games on Saturday, March 28, 2009. It will mark Durham’s fourth consecutive year hosting the event and its 12th time in total. Fans will once again be treated to a day of non-stop action as over 150 of the top basketball players from across the province will take part in events such as the two-ball competition, three-point shootout and of course the games itself.

Both events will be taking place in the new gymnasium at the Durham College Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre and are expected to draw huge crowds from the local community.

Durham College has been a popular destination for past provincial and national Championships. Most recently, the Lords have hosted the OCAA Basketball All-Star Games (2008, 2007 & 2006), OCAA Women’s Fastball Championship (2007, 2005 & 2002), OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship (2007 & 2005), OCAA Golf Championship (2005), OCAA Touch Football Championship (2005), CCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship (2003) & the CCAA Golf Championship (2002 & 2001).
