Mayer and Doris named MVP at OCAA Volleyball All-Star Game – Basketball festivities to go on Saturday at DC!
Peterborough, Ont. - The 16th annual Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) All-star game took place on Saturday with the top athletes from around the province taking part in the festivities at Fleming College in Peterborough. Four Durham College athletes participated in the event including Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.), Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.), Jamie Mayer (Penetanguishene, Ont.) and Jeff Torraville (Oshawa, Ont.).
Doris and Mayer earned top honours in their respective matches as they each took home the East Region MVP award.
Athletes started their day off with an interactive clinic hosted by Ontario Volleyball Association Technical Director, Jason Trepanier who utilized the DartFish video program. After a lunch break, it was time for the men and women to part ways and meet their new teammates for a brief practice before their matches later that afternoon.
The women kicked off the games going a thrilling five sets that resulted in the West Region defeating the East Region 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 15-9). Michelle Overzet of the Humber Hawks paced the West Region hitters with 14 kills in the match, while Jenn Lenis of Trent Excalibur led the East Region with nine kills.
Stefanie Hancock of the Nipissing Lakers was dominant from the serving line, jump serving five big aces. She also accumulated 12 kills in the match and was named the West Region’s Most Valuable Player. Landis Doyle, also of the Humber Hawks played a consistent game, downing seven kills and adding an ace and was named the West Region Player of the Game.
The OCAA’s all-time leading blocker Mandi Doris of the Durham Lords left fans wanting more as she recorded a game high four blocks, all of which would have made any highlight reel. Doris also added six kills to her totals and was named the East Region’s Most Valuable Player.
Meagan McLellan of the Georgian Grizzlies was a defensive standout, racking up 10 digs in the match. She also added two kills, an ace and a block to her game totals and was named the East Region Player of the Game.
After a brief net change, it was the men’s turn to take centre stage.
In their three set match it was the East Region defeating the West Region 2-1 (25-9, 25-21, 18-25). Brian Archibald of the Seneca Sting was the top kill earner for the East Region notching eight in the match, while Algonquin’s Charley Hamilton followed closely with seven to pace the East team.
Mike Hammond of the Georgian Grizzlies used his height to alter numerous shots and was named the East Region’s Player of the Game after posting three kills, an ace and a dig. Steve Regier of the Niagara Knights was also named the Player of the Game for the West Region after downing three kills and adding a block and two digs.
Jamie Mayer of the Durham Lords was solid in each discipline of the game recording four kills, three aces, one block and a dig, good enough to earn Most Valuable Players honours for the winning East Region team.
Adam LeBlanc of the Nipissing Lakers ripped three kills for the West Region and added a stuff block and a dig in the match and was named the West Region’s Most Valuable Player.
With the completion of the 16th Annual All-star games, it now concludes the 2008-09 Men’s and Women’s volleyball season.
It is now time for the Ontario Basketball All-Stars from across the province to gather at the Durham College Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre on Saturday, March 28, 2009 to participate in the 22nd annual Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Basketball All-Star Games.
